Qualification (CNU)

The prerequisite for applying to a position as Maître de conférences (Associate Professor) or Professeur des universités (Full Professor) is the qualification granted by the National Council of Universities (CNU).

🔎 General Principles

• Qualification is mandatory for Associate Professor positions (with some exceptions).

• It is obtained within a specific CNU section corresponding to your discipline.

• Applicants are advised to apply in the section closest to their research field.

• The qualification is valid for four years.

• The PhD must have been defended before the deadline set by the CNU.

Applications are now submitted via the ministerial online platform:

The calendar is published each year in the autumn (typically applications are submitted in November/December).

Each qualified candidate receives a qualification number for each CNU section.

Publication of Positions

Open positions are published on:

The main recruitment campaign generally takes place:

• February / March for the main campaign.

Detailed job descriptions are available:

• on the university’s website (e.g., Université Grenoble Alpes)

⚠️ Publication in the Official Journal is no longer the primary source of consultation; all procedures are now centralized through the national platform.

Application File

Applications are fully dematerialized and submitted via ODYSSEE.

The application file generally includes:

• Detailed CV

• PhD defense report

• Research outputs and publications

• Research project

• Teaching project

• Administrative documents (qualification certificate, ID, etc.)

Deadlines are generally set 3 to 4 weeks after the publication of the positions.

Selection and Interview

The former “specialist committees” have been replaced by:

Interview Format

• Duration: approximately 20–30 minutes

• Presentation of academic background

• Research project

• Teaching project

• Questions from the committee

Invitations are typically sent 10 to 15 days before the interview date.

Ranking and Appointment

After the interviews:

• The committee establishes a ranking.

• The Academic Council validates the proposal.

• Results are published on GALAXIE.

Ranked candidates indicate their preferences in the application system.

Final appointment depends on:

• Ranking

• Stated preferences

• Possible withdrawals

📅 Appointments take effect on September 1st.

Single Annual Campaign (Abolition of the Autumn Session)

⚠️ The autumn session has been discontinued.

There is now only one main annual recruitment campaign in the spring.
Positions that remain unfilled may be filled through alternative procedures (e.g., internal promotion schemes or rolling recruitment), but there is no longer a national autumn session as existed in 2009.
