In Memory of Peter Schuck

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Schuck on September 10, 2022. Peter was an emeritus CNRS Research Director. He was an exceptional colleague, a great physicist of worldwide renown, the author of foundational work in theoretical physics, and an extremely active researcher until his final days.

A world expert on the many-body problem, both in nuclear physics and in condensed-matter physics, he was particularly interested in phenomena of condensation and superfluidity in nuclear matter and in ultracold atomic gases. Together with his collaborators, he notably developed a theory of quartet condensation and identified alpha-particle condensation as a candidate for the ground state of nuclei such as ¹²C and ¹⁶O. Peter was a devoted member of the theoretical physics community in Grenoble and a close associate of Philippe Nozières, who passed away a few months ago.

Together with Peter Ring, Peter authored the book The Nuclear Many-Body Problem, which has become a reference in the field. His scientific contributions were recognized by the Franco-German Gay-Lussac–Humboldt Prize (2004) and the Lise Meitner Prize of the European Physical Society (2018). Since 2003, he had divided his time between the Institute of Nuclear Physics in Orsay and the LPMMC in Grenoble.

We often spoke with Peter—not only about Feynman diagrams and the Thomas–Fermi model, but also about personal matters, society, or politics. Peter always found the right words to support his colleagues, offered valuable advice, and showed sincere interest in each of us. His open-mindedness, attentiveness, and integrity will be deeply missed.

Peter had a very youthful spirit. He was always curious and eager to understand the research of his colleagues; he frequently asked questions during seminars and always sought to grasp the essence of scientific work. It was this inner youthfulness that made every interaction with him easy and enjoyable. And this is how he will remain forever in our memory: young, curious, and sincere.

Our thoughts go out to his family, his wife Pascale, his two children, and his recently born grandchild.
